About Martin Bush
Martin Bush is a contemporary abstract painter based in Plymouth, UK. His work explores rhythm, colour, movement and emotional energy, drawing on influences from music, landscape, and lived experience. Across more than two decades, Martin has developed a distinctive visual language that blends expressive spontaneity with refined compositional control.
His paintings are held in private collections across the UK, Europe, the US and Asia. Martin has exhibited widely, produced large‑scale commissions, and continues to evolve his practice through bold experimentation and immersive studio work.
Martin’s work is driven by a simple belief: art should move you — emotionally, physically, viscerally. His paintings invite viewers to step into a world of colour, rhythm and sensation, where each piece becomes an experience rather than an object.
Martin formerly served as Creative Director and co‑owner of Canvas Gallery in Plymouth, where he curated exhibitions, supported regional artists, and helped bring new talent to the forefront through high‑quality contemporary shows. After two years he chose to step away from the gallery in mid‑2026 to refocus fully on his studio practice.
This new chapter is not only about creating fresh work — it is also about returning to, reassessing, and celebrating the extensive body of paintings he has produced over the past two decades. Many of these works remain available, and revisiting them has become an important part of understanding the arc of his practice and the foundations of where he is heading next.
Now entering his sixth decade, Martin sees this period not as a twilight stage but as a creative re‑birth — a shift into a deeper, more ambitious phase of his artistic career. With renewed clarity and direction, he is developing new work while re‑engaging with the paintings that have shaped his journey.
